When Should I Repair or Replace My Deck in Southern?

When the cost of repairs approaches the cost of replacing the entire deck, you should consider replacing the whole thing. Even structurally sound deck materials may need to be replaced  in just a few years.

Massey Deck and Fence suggests you ask yourself these questions when considering refurbishing or replacing a deck in Southern MD:

      1.  Does the repair costs equal that of replacing the entire deck?

When the cost of repairs approaches the cost of replacing the entire deck, you should consider replacing

the whole thing. Even structurally sound deck materials may need to be replaced  in just a few years.

      2.  How old is the deck?

A 10-15 year old wood deck has reached its life expectancy whereas a composite deck has 25+ year life.

      3. Do you have one or more rotten posts?

One or more posts are labor intensive to replace but still not as expensive as a deck replacement.

      4. Are the posts buried in ground or resting on footers?

Buried posts tend to rot beneath ground level so that shortens their life.

      5. Do beams need to be replaced?

Beam replacement usually involves replacing large sections of the deck so normally replacement is less.

      6. Do fascia boards need replacing?

If fascia boards need replacing usually this means water is being held against the beam so replacement is a better option.
